Out of curiosity and my sense of adventure, I moved to Elma, Washington at the ripe old age of twenty-two. I fell in love with all the hiking, national parks and all the beauty that is Washington. I made Washington my forever home.
I joined the VFW Auxiliary under the service of my father Herbert Steele Gregg. Dad served in the U S Navy during WWII. My father once wrote a summation of how he survived D-Day that will be eventually placed in the US Naval Museum in Pensacola, Florida.
I enjoy audio books of WWII history and volunteering with a variety of organizations that serve Veterans, their families and the communities they live in. I also enjoy cooking and singing.
I feel as a VFW Auxiliary member and Dept. President we need to reach out more to our youth and bring the ideals of this wonderful organization to them. Introducing our youth on how to support veterans and their families and why it is important is one of the challenges we face today. I believe that our youth today is our future, and our future leadership.
Educational programs are necessary for our youth, and we can provide them that. Essays, art, youth activities, continuing education scholarships and the confidence to grow and stand up to the many choices our youth have in front of them. Teaching community Outreach as a valuable opportunity to learn, grow and experience new possibilities.
We need to reach out and embrace our youth if we want to grow a thriving VFW Auxiliary organization into the next 100 years. I believe we can step up and meet this challenge. I believe we can find new reasons for which our VFW Auxiliaries can be useful, growing and thriving throughout the years to come. I believe we can flood our State with new memberships, scholarship applicants, grant requests and Legislation support so we can further help our Veterans, Families and our future VFW Auxiliary needs. To support our Sisters, Brothers and Comrades in the best and worst of times is a synopsis of the good that we're made of. Let's grow Washington with deep roots and be the tree branches to reach out to our families.
That is why, this year I have chosen to make my theme "Veterans, Families First".
My motto will be "Patience is a Virtue" in order to remind us of the patience we all need when reaching out to others and sharing who we are. As we undertake our new year let us do so with grace and understanding.
I look forward to meeting and working with you while traveling around our great state of Washington this year.
Respectfully,
Sue Gregg
